Week 16: First Week in the Field/Trio Number 3

¡Hola! I got my visa last week and flow up to Trujillo last Tuesday! It's been a crazy week and I dount I'll be able to write about everything that happened!

I woke up on Tuesday at 4:45 to get my bags READY. I left the CCM a little bit before 6 am with 7 latinos going to the Trujillo South mission. Our flight left at 9:30 and I tried to sleep the whole time. The flight was supposed to be online 55 minutes, but it took almost an hour monger because the plane just circled Trujillo for an hour for whatever reason. I was met by 2 latino elders whole too me to the mission home. We had sandwiches for lunch which satisfied me because I had no breakfast. I met President and Hermana Hinostroza and the elders who worked in the office. One is from California, Elder Ewell, who is at 22 months right now. I was then picked up by my first comps, Elder Richards from Alberta Canada and Elder Baizaga from Lima. It's weird to think that most people don't experience a trio on the mission, but I've already been in 3 and that's all I've had! It's going to be strange in a normal duo. Elder Richards calls colored pencils "pencil crayons." Is that normal for canadians? Someone need to ask Elder DeMaere.

My first area is Tahuantinsuyo, one of the poorer partes of Trujillo. Our apartment is on the third floor of a members house. It's an alright apartment. The bathrooms are pretty cramped and a little gross though. Elder Richards has been out for a year and Elder Baizaga 5 months and speak decent english. They're both zone leaders, so it's a little difficult to be trained because of how busy they are.

My first lesson was with a lady named Selene, who's family are all members. Her hour is in the poorest part. All the houses have concrete for floors and are missing a wall or roof in a few areas. You know someone is doing better when they atleast have wood or tiles instead of concrete or they have a couch instead of plastic stools. I spoke a little bit about baptism through my broken Spanish, because I was asked to. Then my comps asked her to be baptized, and she said yes! We taught a few more lessons throughout the week too, to recently baptized members and these with baptismal dates.

Our area goss up a hill, so there is a lot of hiking. It's also really dirty. Los of dogs too. Dogs in the street, dogs on the roof, dogs barking, dogs sleeping, dogs fighting, etc. It's also imposible to sleep after 6 am because of the roosters, music, and traveling salespeople.

The second Day was zone conference, so we got a taxi to the mission home. We can only rodeado taxis, busses, or walk in my mission. The third day we did splits, with Elder Chorrez replacing Elder Richards for a day. I was able to bar my testimony that night in a lesson. We also do a lot of calling of references to set up meetings. My spanish is still pretty bad, but it's starting to improve and I was able to talk during all the calls. On Sunday we were able to set up 7 lessons for this week!

The owner of the house cooks for us. I really won't be buying my on food for the entire mission, except for maybe on pdays. Breakfast is really small and we don't even get plates. Usually a hard boiled egg with some bread. Sometimes we get to put cereal in yogurt. Lunch is the biggest meal. Dinner is always just lunch leftovers that we heat up. My first meal was cow intestines on rice. Yummy. My favorite meal has been chifa, which is Peruvian food mixed with Chinese. On Sunday we broke our fast with causa, which is a layer of mashed potatoes with chicken and veggies in the middle with more potatoes on top. We were given Pepsi to drink and a dunkin donut. Then I was told we were going to someone's house for another meal right after. It was at a cramped table in a tight corner, two screaming children, and I couldn't help but laugh to myself because I was already stuffed. Ah, the mission life.

I doubt I covered everything, but I don't have as much time to write everything like I did in the CCM. I hope you have a great week!

Hasta luego,
Elder Jensen
