Week 21: I'm a Freakin' Culinary Genius

Well this week really seemed to fly by! I hope you had a great week too!

Our pensionista always delivers our meals late. Breakfast at 8? No at 9:30. Lunch at 1? No at 2:30. Dinner at 8? No at 10. Because of that at 7 or so on Wednesday I was just sitting there, daydreaming about peanut butter. Then I remembered that I had been given 4 packets of peanut butter to bring with me just in case of emergencies! That's when it clicked. I looked at the Cua Cuas (one of my favorite Peruvian candies, it's kinda like a Kit Kat with wafers covered in chocolate) sitting on my desk and my future as a  revolutionary candy maker started to take form. I took one of my packets of peanut butter and squeezed a bunch out onto the Cua Cua, laughing the whole time at my genius. And as you probably expected, it's heavenly. (I mean, it is chocolate covered in peanut butter) I felt like Remy at the beginning of Ratatouille when he's getting all excited about what he should use to cook that mushroom. And when he makes Ameal "try them together." Oh the possibilities with my new creation! Oh, and I detected nuttiness in the peanut butter.🐀

Along with the hermanas in our area we're teaching a man named Felipe, who's family are all members but he isn't. We got him to come to church this week so things are starting to move forward! They do have the most annoying and jumpiest dog I've ever seen though. I as much move a muscle and this dog freaks out. They fed us dinner on Thursday, which was ok, but I had wanted to eat what our pensionista gave us, which was caramel spread on pancakes. I had a few of those the next morning. But it turns out having some of those left over and not eating them was a blessing! Because the next day our pensionista only gave us 3 tiny slices of sweet potato for dinner. We were able to eat some of the leftover pancakes so we could survive until breakfast. I guess I forgot to say that 2 weeks ago I tried turkey gizzard, which didn't taste horrible but it was just like eating a piece of rubber. But this week I was given cow liver, which is not that good. Maybe it was just this one, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Luckily I was able to clear that out with a little bit of cua cua dipped in peanut butter.

We helped teach a seminary class for 16 year olds. It's hard enough to understand the Old Testament in English but it feels impossible in Spanish. We were also able to attend 2 more baptisms this week, one from another set of elders and another for a boy who turned 8. It was also exciting to hear that Juana, one lady I taught in my first area, has been baptized! I'm writing that one down as a baptism for me since I assisted in the teaching. I'm so glad to know that people are making their first covenants with God and seeing their lives change!

Yesterday I was able to briefly walk around the Trujillo plaza, which was amazing. It's the first thing that shows up when you search Trujillo in google. I saw the yellow chapel and quickly looked around the central statue before we left. We'll have to go back one of these pdays. We then gave a blessing to an hermana who can't come to church because of her physical condition. I consecrated the oil. It's kind of hard to memorize Latino names since they have 4 of them and say them so fast that I end up butchering them so bad when I say them. With time I'll be able to get it. My Spanish is improving, but I've still got a long ways to go.

Some random things I saw this week. One of our taxi drivers had a picture of the old guy from Squid Game as his screensaver. I wouldn't know I didn't watch it. As my comp and I were walking home from church yesterday we saw someone wave at us from his car. It took me a second it was Presidente Hinostroza. That was a fun little sighting. Also I've been doing 3 minute planks at the beginning of all my workouts and finish with about 10-15 minutes of jump rope. Jumping rope is actually really fun and good cardio, especially since my companion doesn't work out and there's no way we're going on a run because of that.

I had a pretty good week! Hopefully we can start making more progress with investigators in the coming weeks, because I really want to attend a baptism of someone I taught! I'm seeing all these photos of other companionships with their multiple baptisms and i just want to have someone I know baptized and start their journey to becoming like God. I hope you have a fantastic week and have sunshine in your soul!

Until next week,
Elder Jensen
