Week 42: Who's Got Time for Sunscreen?
Hola! Como esta? This was a good week and I hope it was the same for you! Let me know how you're doing!
Tuesday morning we went to the stake president's house to do some service for him with other elders from the zone. Some chipped the paint away on his wall while my comp and I went to the roof to clean dirt off. I knew I should've put sunscreen on, but I thought I was stronger than I was. So I got fried. Cleaning the roof was a hassle because it took us a few tries to figure out what was the most effective. At first we tried throwing water onto it with a bucket and then scrubbing with brooms, but that didn't do anything. We then kept the hose continuously running and that worked better, but it practically flooded the roof and the roof was uneven so it created pools. Elder Kennedy and I later had to sweep to the drainage pipe. We eventually found out the rags with running water worked best, but we had two of us up on the same rickety ladder at the same time so we called it good. The stake president fed us some Pizza Hut and (I couldn't believe it) ice! We actually had ice in our Coca Cola. But I probably ate too much pizza. It was a nice break from all the other food we eat.
From the stake president's house I went on exchanges with Elder Huaman in Pueblo Libre. He only has a month in the mission but it looks like Elder Gerber's been raising him right! We gave a blessing of health to hermana Keiko, (the sister of hermana Elva who we're teaching right now) had a noche hogar with the family of Hermano Tufinio, and created steps for baptism for hermana Maritza. Our goal is to have her baptized by the end of the year. Elder Huaman told me he felt the spirit strongly, so I guess I did something right. Still didn't see her at church though. This week we decided to hunt down some kids who had inactive member families. With Elder Huaman we found 2 kids, Diego and Victoria, who both haven't been baptized. But for some reason in area book there were 2 profiles for Diego, one said he was baptized, and the other said he wasn't. He was on the ward member list, but also on the list of unbaptized members. This puzzled us but we had to wait till Sunday to ask him again. I'll describe it below.
On Wednesday morning we woke up early to give blessings of health to Hermano Dante's daughters, who were both sick. Afterwards we headed to the multizone conference. We learned about working with members and how to prepare them to help with missionary work and be strong members for life. This is something that will help now that we have a ward mission leader who's very active and knows what he's doing. For lunch we had lomo soltado with some really good noodles. We even had ice cream with oreos for dessert. We stayed around afterward to wait for a package my mom sent me and while others waited for their new phones. I got to talk with the other Americans in the zone which is always nice. When we got back we taught hermana Keiko again and gave a blessing of health to hermana Milagros, who's been going through some tough times.
We spent a lot of the end of our week at the same house. I described this last week, but there's an inactive member who works and lives at a veterinary hospital and has lots of family. Last Saturday we talked with one of her inactive family members who's partner and stepson aren't members. He's very enthusiastic about his step son, Josai, getting baptized, although it's hard to see how interested he is about returning to church. But we had a lesson with Josai and put him on date for baptism! He's 10 years old and understood really well and is becoming a superstar! He came to church and our pensionista told us his face was glowing the whole time during the primary class. As we were coming down the stairs from asking for permission for Josai to be baptized, a man in another room called us in to hear about our beliefs. His name's Alan, and he's also an inactive member of the family. His partner, Jenifer, isn't a member and we're able to talk with them as well as their friends, Rafael and Minie, and siblings, David and Flavia. We discussed our beliefs and answered a lot of questions, which mainly came from Rafael. We gave them a Book of Mormon and set another appointment. Minie and Rafael weren't there for the second one, but we continued getting to know the others. Alan has a desire to return to church. Although they didn't end up coming this week they're people we can work with. The inactive owner of the house, (I can't remember her name), also presented us to her employee, Juliani, who's also interested to learn more. She doesn't live in our area, but it was still cool to find so many awesome people in the same house.
On Sunday we got Josai to church and also saw Diego and Victoria. Later that day we went to see Diego and Victoria, and we also ended up teaching their cousin Patrick too. It was a little hard to get them focused, but we ended up asking them all to be baptized and they accepted too! They'll be quite a bit harder to teach than Josai, but if we can get their inactive family members to reactivate and help it will be a lot easier.
Other than that not much happened this week. Let me know how you're doing and I just want you to know that missions are the best! Have an absolutely fantastic week!
Elder Jensen
