Week 61: It's Just a Little Rain

This was a little different of a week. Hope you all are doing well and staying safe!

On Monday for pday last week we went to the mall to pull money and buy things. Afterwards we had our district activity in the mission home with Presidente and Hermana Hiatt. We made tacos and pizza and ate till we were stuffed and couldn't eat anymore. I tried to help in the kitchen but there wasn't very much for me to do because I had to be told because I literally didn't know what to do. Just goes to show the knowledge I lack about cooking and my inability in the kitchen. I'm more of a dish washer, and actually a pretty good one (ask my mom) so I just sliced some peppers and listened to Elder Ampuero do his Ampuero thing and talk. I also talked with president for a little bit with some of the other Elders. All the cabinets in the mission home are really weird. None of them have handles and you have to press them to open. Also we tried to get an electric oven to work but we couldn't figure it out. We think it was broken. We may not have finished cooking until 6 so we actually stayed at the mission home until 7:30 with President, long after pday ended.

On Tuesday Elderr Larkin got all packed up and we went and had a few lessons. We met with a man named Mario who's father came up to us while we were waiting for Cirilo one day and told us we should visit his son. So we did, and he's cool. We'll see what comes of it. We also had a little impromptu goodbye in the chapel with some soda and chips with some of the members when we were passing by for Bryan. It was sad, especially to see him say goodbye to Kahory, his first baptism. We went with Bryan yo alesson with Yonan, which I will just say was a pretty awkward lesson. Hevwas feeling a little sick and didn't say anything pretty much. But we rode back and I know I said Bryan started liking me again in last week's email, but the second he learned Elder Larkin was leaving he decided he hated me again. That ended up lastimg the entire week. I'll just say I've been called more bad words by him than by any other person. (He doesn't really understand what they mean, although I'm sure he knows they're bad) I know he was joking, but jokes like thisnusually don't last 2 weeks. He repeatedly said tha5 we just don't work together and didn't want to talk to me. But finally after a week of torture he finally snapped and broke the joke. He's cool and we're fine, it was all a joke, even though it was extremely unfunny.

On Wednesday Ángela gave us fried chicken and french fries for breakfast because it was Elder Larkin's favorite. She loves missionaries so saying goodbye is very hard for her. We went to the offices where we were all mingled. We had to go up to President and ask him where we were going and who our comps were. I got my new companion, Elder Lopez! He has 17 months in the mission. I got to see and say goodbye to Elder Lumbre, Elder Fernández, and Elder Richards one last time before they went home. Man I'm going to miss them. And it turns out that Elder Larkin only went to Bellavista, an area in my district with Elder Huaman, so I'll still see him a lot. I'm going to miss being comps with him though, because guiding him here in Peru was awesome, we worked together, and we had such a great time. I'm going to remember this transfer in Huanchaco. We had a few lessons that day, presented Elder Lopez to some of the leaders in the ward, and filled out a part of Huanchaquito Alto on the map we have to make ourselves. We passed by Nayeli and Maria's house too but they weren't there. I kind of felt like they were ghosting us, that is, until we actually bumped into Nayeli on the street when she was walking with Bryan, Daren, and hermana Aracely, the seminary teacher. Apparently, she's still going to seminary! She also told us her mom's schedule changed. She also seemed to be a lot more talkative and open with the seminary so it looks like she's having a great time!

I had a few baptismal interviews I did on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday we filled out the map in some parts of the area I still hadn't visited. Didn't have as many new people as I would've liked but we were making it easier for the work moving forward. On Friday we had district council and I think it went pretty well. It's just a little hard here because the district is so spread out so we have to change up where we have it each week so we can all spend an equal amount of money to get there. But on Friday night there was a lot of rain here from the cyclone and Trujillo started to flood because they're not prepared for rain here. We didn't see too much here in Huanchaco, (which is a 15 minute drive from Trujillo), but it was still raining harder than I've seen it before here. There's a hole in our roof because our apartment technically still isn't complete, so we had to block it off with a bunch of wood, stools, and bags. That still wasn't enough for it all so we put some bucket to catch the remaining water. We stayed up a bit later than normal fixing that up. But Elder Larkin and his new comp and others up more by the mountain in Trujillo had it bad with a lot of flooding in the streets and their apartments. I wish I could've helped a little more but I am far away. It's kind of weird that we didn't see much down here in Huanchaco when everyone else had it bad in the city.

On Saturday we did a bunch of contacts. I also had to do a lot of checking up on the rest of the district because of the rain. We were left without power for a while but now it seems that a lot of Trujillo (minus Huanchaco) doesn't have water right now. The city is also going to reduce the water by 50% this week because of the rain. For all those who might be worried, I am fine. We tried to do some service but that fell through. It's just a little rain, not much more than an average rainstorm we'd see in the states, it's just that no one here is prepared for it. But we're fine right now, hopefully it doesn't cause much more damage and hopefully the rest of the missionaries can get back to work and get their water soon.

Sunday was a little slow, obviously because of the rain. We woke up early and went to the chapel to help clean it. Apparently it was flooded the day before because a large section of the chapel doesn't have a roof. But we just had to mop it up. Hermana Nayeli came and she seems a lot more open now and hopefully we can have a lesson with her this week so we can put her on date, like we planned two weeks ago. Yessenia and Erick also came with their family. Apart from them we saw Hermana Carol and Marta come, who are inactive members who we've been teaching. We didn't see anyone else come really, but it'll be better next week.

For pday we kind of just stayed in our pensión. Elder Larkin and Elder Huaman came down for a second but other than that not much.

Hopefully the rain has stopped and we can get back to work as normal. Have a great week!
