Week 66: The Holiest Taxi Driver

Hola amigos! I hope you're all doing well! I don't have too much time to write this week but we'll see what I can write.

Normally the buses stop running at about 8:45 so we have to get lucky sometimes if we want to make it back to Las Lomas from Huanchaquito. On Wednesday no busses were coming so we were worrying we were going to have to get a taxi, which is pretty expensive, or we'd have to walk, which would take about an hour. But luckily some passer-bys shouted "Elderes!" So we got in their car and they offered to drive us to the pension. Turns out it was the stake presidency. Stake president and the 1st and 2nd counselors. So that was fun getting casually lifted by the stake president!

As for our friends we found a few new people this week we hope will progress. We found a gray dot in San Francisco for a lady named Raquel. We knocked on her door and she told us that a few years ago she had a dream about a book that would get her closer to God. She requested a visit from the missionaries because she worked close to the temple, but lost contact with them. Of course we gave her a Book of Mormon and we'll see what we can do with her. We also got a reference from the APs of an inactive member who they met with in their area who said he wanted to come back to the church and baptize his wife and daughter. We had a lesson on Friday with him and his daughter and they're pretty cool. We'll keep working with them to see what we can do!

We also had 2 family home evenings with hermana Yessenia and her family this week! A normal one on Monday with everyone where we talked a little bit about Easter. We had another one on Saturday because she wanted to invite her neighbor! So we got there at 6 but Yessenia told us that her neighbor, Maria, wouldn't arrive for another hour. After Elder Lopez played a little soccer with Kim and Masaru we decided to map out Huanchaquito Bajo, which is the only place we haven't mapped out yet. We didn't get to all of it because it's surprisingly huge. We were walking for 30 minutes in one direction when it got really dark. Most of the building there are abandoned and I have a feeling it's where all the drug traders are. We made it back to Yessenia's and had a great message about the Book of Mormon and showed a video about it as well. Afterwards we played la papa se quema and jenga and had some lemon merengue pie for dessert! Unfortunately when we got back to the apartment I could tell I had food poisoning again so I spent some time in the bathroom. I woke up at 1:45 and threw up. I felt mostly fine the next day though and feel good now.

We're still trying hard with our friend Elis. As I've said she lives far from the chapel and has to travel in bus or taxi. We tried having hermana Ruth, (Bryan's mom), come to a lesson with her but last minute she couldn't. She didn't end up coming to church this week for what seems like a valid reason, but this week we really need to help her come and we're finally going to have a faithful member come with us to a lesson, even though it can be hard because she lives far from us. But she does have interest and ready in the Book of Mormon and even told us she had a dream about the church. We actually had planned to talk with her more about Joseph Smith on Friday but before we even told her that she told us she wanted to learn more about Joseph Smith! So of course we did so and even sent her the Joseph Smith movie to watch. Please pray for her. Our friend Nina is also pretty funny. She actually lives very close to the chapel but used to attend an adventist church so she feels a little weird about joining a new church. She came to church last week and we passed again on Thursday and invited her to come again. She said she only came because it was Easter -_- but she said she liked the members except for one man with a beard who doesn't smile because she thinks he and his family are "perfect." But we talked with her a little bit and after I finally took control of the situation when she and my comp were just talking about her cat for almost an hour. We told her we were going to pass by again on Saturday for a moment for her to tell us if she was going to come to church or not. We passed by again that day, and she told us she wasn't going to go. We asked her why, but I don't want to convince her to join the church, I want her to come of her own free will. But then she started complaining about how the people who come to clean her house don't do a good job so of course I told her that we were going to pass by on Tuesday morning to clean up for her. I'd offered to do service before, but this is the first time she didn't change the subject. But then she started having an argument with herself saying, "I'm not going to go," and then saying, "maybe I will." Finally she said that she'll come with us. She actually walked by herself to the chapel and the man with the beard shook her hand. Also we have hermana Lucy who also lives very close to the chapel. She's friends with a member who we invited to accompany us to a lesson on Saturday. We talked about the sacrament and she told us she was feeling the spirit. She came to church again, so hopefully we can start taking the next steps. Cirilo came to church but Nayeli was in Cajamarca so she didn't. Funny enough, we had planned on sharing more about Joseph Smith with her too but she asked us if there any videos about him we could send her.

We also took some photos by the cathedral overlooking the ocean this week. I guess also we had a great lesson with our friend Margarita this week who promised to come to church, but when we called her she told us that she wouldn't be able to meet with us anymore.

I'm sure I forgot some things that happened this week so maybe I'll write them in the next one. Have a great week!
